Ray, The 2nd of Doug's flies you posted, seems similar to Nemes' Mother's Day Caddis, with the flat-on-the-top partridge wing and 2 different body materials. Are you cutting the raffia into narrow strips with scissors (free-handed) or do you use some other method that results in a consistently wide strip?

I tied this version with Blue-eared pheasant herl as a substitute for Heron. Boy is it fragile. It's tied over Pearsall's Gossamer (Ash / #10). I like this fly lightly hackled, so I removed the fibers from 1 side of the feather.
