Re: Purple March Brown Spider

Purple cows are tasty. Brown cows are so ...pedestrian. Resist the urge to cut your beef until you see that wonderfully mottled Pearsall's purple/Peacock herl green glow appear on its flanks. Like the beautiful fly that Upstate has posted, your beef will come alive with a translucent purple sheen th...

Re: GRHE Dark Version

John , thanks for giving us a detailed method off blending fur. I personally don’t need a lot so a couple of masks will be good for me. Have you ever tried a LAW dubbing rake? I’m wondering if the Hares Masks we buy in the USA are the same as those in the U.K.? Over here I don’t believe the “Hare” ...

Re: Dating Mills Flies

bb, I hope you will remember to take those with you this Spring to NW WI outing. <hint! hint!> Where would those flies have been made? per dozen... $1.50. How the hell did they make money???? John Mills imported flies from England, the world supplier of commercial flies for many years, but Alfred M...

Re: Dating Mills Flies

This may seem silly but the writing on the packages speaks to a ink pen as opposed to a ball point. Gut and ink: 40's-50's-maybe early 60's? I suppose if the the packages were kept somewhere safe and quiet, out of the sun, they could look fresh and bright long after their manufacture date. That's as...

Re: Sunshine and the Dry Fly

While I'm not going to try and dissect Dunne's tying methodology, I'm completely unqualified, or even fish a lot of dries for that matter, I love how much passion he put into the book. The language he used to describe colors was wonderfully evocative. He describes a nameless Dun that didn't appear i...

Re: Green Caddis Soft Hackle

Barry, I'm sorry it has taken me awhile to get back to this post. Here is a sample of the fly I mentioned (locally called the Green Butt), and similar to what Bob posted. In the past, I've tied these on scud style hooks; however, I'm now trying this wet/nymph hook. I hope it will improve my hooking...

Re: Spotted Sedge Emerger

Beautiful flies. The fly holder block is so much better than my bench full of wine corks. There's Birdseye Maple out in the shop just begging to be turned into one of these.

...you think maybe there's a correlation between my scorched earth bench and all of those corks?

Man, I love it when you make these tutorials. So well done, so helpful.

Your mantra of mise en place shames me. If I put my scissors down, which I do because if I hold onto them I just draw blood, I immediately lose them in the debris field.
