I was taught, and still fish with snelled flies. My leader is as follows: 1. Nail knot 6” of .021 hard Maxima to the flyline. Add a figure eight loop, 5/16” in diameter to the Maxima. 2. Bill - that is the exact way to scotch tie hackle(step two)............one of these days Ill get that SBS done!!

Lots of great replies on this topic - I think the blue eared pheasant that Carl mentions is better than heron in many instances.
