Varnishing Over Waxed Thread Head

Leisenring and many others suggest varnishing over a well waxed thread head for a smooth finish with added security, as an alternative to a head of just waxed tying silk (which they say itself is sufficient)... My question is, doesn't the solvent thinner in the varnish undermine the sticking propert...
