Re: White Miller Caddis

For those of you who haven't had the opportunity to fish the Firehole River in YNP, this stretch is typical of what you'll find. Fishing opens the last of May and they usually shut it down about July 1st because the water gets too warm. It then re-opens in the fall. YNP16_0901__Resized.jpg YNP16_090...

Re: White Miller Caddis - Update

A quick update on fishing the White Miller Flymph on the Firehole River in YNP. I fished June 23rd and 24th under clear blue skies, hot temperatures, windy as all get out, full moon, low and clear water running at 66 F. Caught lots of small rainbow trout. Nothing over 10". Most 8" long. So...

Re: Soft Hackle Scud/Grub (rough draft - concept fly)

Bill Bailey has made a gray colored blend of seal's fur for a vintage Irish salmon fly. Maybe Bill can chime in with his recipe and save me from searching for a copy of the pix he sent me.

Re: Baetis Soft Hackle

Ray, I use little feathers from the "elbow" of a Teal wing because 1] they are small enough for #18-#22 flies and 2] I think the natural oils in the feather help keep it in the film. You can also use Mallard wing feathers if you want a lighter color. I take the feathers from the area the p...

Re: Woodcock spiders

A Starling and Purple or Snipe and Purple is just the ticket in the early spring when the little Black Stonefies start hatching. Local waters such as the So Platte, Clear Creek, Bear Creek and So Boulder Creek will have hundreds of these little (#18) stoneflies sitting on the snow lining the banks. ...

Re: Bob White and Primrose

When wet, the fly does turn a lovely olive shade. I found in my dyeing of materials that the easiest way to get olive was to add a little black to a yellow dye pot. Same idea here. I fish lots of black hooks out of my stash of vintage hooks and modern hooks that are black. A lot of my soft hackles a...

Re: Quill Body Soft Hackles

I usually do not use head cement or super glue under the quill. A well waxed (fly tying wax not dubbing wax) thread base seems to hold well enough for me.
