Gartside Philo Mayfly Emerger SBS

Companion to the Philo Caddis. Tied here as a generic; change colors to suit your needs.


hook - Dai Riki 320 #14
thread - MFC 8/0 sand
tail - partridge
body - squirrel/hare's ear
wing - pheasant aftershaft/filoplume
legs - partridge

mash barb, start thread, wrap back to point above barb

strip some partridge fibers, measure (shank length), and tie in

dub thread, dub body

unwind thread to remove any twist, split with bodkin

prep aftershaft, insert in split thread, spin bobbin, moisten/stroke back and wrap

trim bottom, stroke wing up/back, take a few wraps

trim out tip of partridge feather, lay along underside of fly, tie in, slowly pull forward to adjust length (tips to/a bit past point)

trim partridge, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Wow! That is one boss looking pattern! I have always wanted to take up the Philoplume challenge and when I watch you work it....you are just plain good in what you do here!

I haven't taken time to post much recently and have just been following the forum where I can. I wanted to let you know that I think your SBS contributions are Super. Great pattern choices showcasing meticulous technique, consistently and thoughtfully photographed and a real inspiration to get back behind the vise. So thank you for so generously taking the time and making such a valuable contribution mate.

I enjoy seeing good flies constructed with aftershaft feathers. This is a very good looking pattern.
