Skues No. 7 Black Gnat.

This fly is No. 7 of Skues wet fly patterns to serve all practical purposes found in Minor Tactics of the Chalk Stream.
Hook. Allcock w205 size 16 sproat.
Silk. Pearsalls gossamer black.
Wing. Light snipe rolled.
Body. Black silk.
Thorax. Ostrich.
Hackle. Cock starlings crest.

Oooh, I like the looks of that.
When you say the wings are snipe rolled, what does that mean?

A rolled wing is for me a difficult thing to explain in writing. In fact Skues called for the wing on this fly to be rolled and reversed which I did not do. To roll a wing a slip of feather is removed from a wing feather,the tips evened up and then folded ,then twirled or rolled in the fingers. The theory being that a more robust wing us formed.
A reversed wing is formed by tying the wings on above the bend of the hook or in other words tying the Fly backwards with the Hackle covering the bend,barb and point of the hook. This was probably easier to do when blind eyed hooks were commonly used.

Rolled wings are not easy, but with a little bit of practice they’re actually not too difficult. Think of think the early Gordon quill.... At any rate, you have winging it down to a science. Masterful in fact !!
Maybe you should change your screen name to “winger” ??

Thank you. Your explanation was very helpful and I understood it quite well. When I saw the wings I knew something was different about them.
