"In Ross Mueller's book "Flies That Catch Trout", on page #39 Ross describes the Pass Lake Wet Fly. He noted that Stubenvoll tied the calf tail wing IN FRONT of the hackle. While Earl Paape favored the calf tail wing BEHIND the hackle (trude style)."

seems like for every "pass lake" out there there's a pattern that bears its name

Norm, beautifully tied, nicer than I did for my website (https://wiflyfisher.com/Patterns/Pass-L ... attern.asp).

After tying several Pass Lake Specials and doing a WI TU presentation about the fly and how to tie it, I do not want to see another one for a few years.

Man, those are some sharply dressed flies; beautifully tied. I ran into an ancient fisherman on Millinocket Stream many years back who was using this pattern; said he didn't carry much else. He gave me one, and I immediately came home and tied up half a dozen. The old dude was right, they work.

I think I prefer the calf wing behind the hackle, but that's probably just because I'm used to it tied that way.
