Hooks (or hook), what else!

Post by Theroe » Sun Mar 03, 2019 3:48 pm

As most of you may know I Purchased a substantial quantity of old Mustad hooks .......Most were in boxes of 1000, comprised of 10 boxes of 100 each. In one of the boxes, I came across a number 7947, which is very close to one of my all-time favorites, the 7948A. Note: There were only four boxes in a 1000 pack carton. This hook is identical to the 7948A except it has a ringed eye....For me it is just about perfect for north country spiders, especially one I want to sink a bit quicker than a light wire hook would allow; and I love the finish. A very very dark almost black coating with bronze showing through.

Any thoughts?

Dana,

There is a 7947B which is identical to your 7947 except it is TDE:

The 7948A is different, if ever slightly so--I need to pull some out and take pics. But maybe not till tomorrow, as I have Borscht duty right now.

Joseph - Well wouldn’t you know it, I just happen to have some of those handy!

My version has the “extra long shank“-I really like this hook, too. I believe the main difference between the 7947B, and the 7948A is the bend: the latter hook has a model perfect round bend whilst the former has a more sproaty look.

I’m feeling a hook porn topic here :o

WHEW

What a relief-I thought I was about to be chastised by the great FORUM master for posting this in the wrong category( good humor intended-not the ice cream )

All kidding aside, I can’t wait to see those hooks-one of the guys who patronizes our local fly shop mentioned that brand to me Friday afternoon.......

Wait until I have time to show off my NEW "Firehole Sticks 523 BL 3XL Heavy Jig Hook"

Heavy jig hooks, eh? You've been drinking too much of that South American rotgut lately--we are largely civilized gentlemen here--. Heavy jig hooks? Please....

What's with this "whilst" stuff, Dana--reading a lot of British authors lately? Skues?

So--here's a pair to compare: 7948A on the left, 7947B on the right, both size 16:

I don't see a difference in their bends--both seem round or perfect. But the 7947B is, as you noted, a long-shank hook, and has a bit more gape, which therefore makes the bend seem more round, perhaps? Here's another picture with their respective boxes, to show the 7978A is slightly later in production date.

I wish we could put together a comprehensive list of production dates for Mustads (and other hooks) based on their packaging--it would be a bit of work, and would require a trip to Mustad hook Museum (https://www.visitnorway.com/listings/mu ... seum/6841/)--but what's not to like about that?

Add some Farrah Fawcett highlights to that 7947B and I'd hang a picture of that hook on the ceiling over my bed. That's like, the perfect hook.
