Parakeet Feathers

Post by paparex » Thu Jun 21, 2012 6:45 pm

OK all of you brillant tiers.... How would you use parakeet blue body feathers and/or an indigo colored (natural) tail feather? I was given barred gray and white feathers as well. A few have that general appearnce of a French partridge feather, but much smaller. Included are two wing coverts(?) Just guessing... gray to black with white markings. Any patterns come to mind?

Whoa, those sound like really cool feathers to play with. How long are the fibers? If they are long enough, the fibers might make some very interesting fly bodies (think condor-herl bodies, or biot-like bodies). What type of stem do they have? Is it thin enough to wrap? If the stem is really thick, you may want to tye the feather in near the tip before wrapping.

I would love to see any flies that you tye with these feathers. These sound like a perfect opportunity to experiment, and learn how new materials behave. Just the thing that makes tying fun. Use your imagination & please share the results. ;)
