The "three P's"
Pearsall silk
Peacock herl
Partridge hackle
No idea really, just a guess, but they would rate pretty high in my books. And no fair..... you have a copy of the book and I don't.

I hate it when I think I'm buying organic vegetables, and when I get home I discover they are just regular donuts.

REE, no no, no.
All of these wild guess'. Let's put on our thinking caps, turn of the 20th century. The only thread was silk, they didn't have anything else. There were birds, ducks, animals both domestic and wild. There were other natural products that were used in most households of the day.

Not woodcock then.
I know he was a proponent of horsehair wrapped on the body for translucent properties. Bronze peacock was popular.

Re: Here's something
Starling (he was fond of Glanrhos style?)
Wool (not sure to go with sheep wool or pig wool here)
Mallard flank (for his bunched/ roll wing style)
I also imagine domestic fowl hackle would have been up there, farmyard egg laying meat providing birds that were often kept by most households.
So we are to believe silk is a "given" as it was all that was available and a necessity so therefore not a favourite?
