Six steps to tying small flies with large partridge hackle

Thanks VERY much, as this explains alot of the nagging questions my
brain has been wrestling with...some of the how do ya do's, and the
pictures clear most of the mud from the water, so to speak.....

Great tutorial Old Hat!

I am here to post that other side of the coin-Plan B for those who like to tip tie. This is my preferred method and also allows you to get the benefit of the small sized feather at the tip,wrapped while using the natural hackle plier the big stem.

#18 dry fly hook and brown phase Partridge...
#1 Hold the tip and stroke back the feather like Carl does.



#2 You can tie the tip in directly at the separated fibers, leaving the tip intact to provide a good hold for the thread and to be trimmed off after the fly is finished.


#3 After some practice you can trim the tip before tying it in to eliminate cutting the tip off near the head and hackle.


#4 After finishing the body, tie in tip and wrap the hackle using the feather stem as a handle.


#5 A finished small fly using a large Partridge feather as Carl suggested but by plan B! If I do snap the feather off, I only have to go back to the start of the hackling not the start of the body.


And by the way Old Hat ties these things like works of art!

Except for those patterns that call for the hackle to be wrapped back through the thorax (flymphs, Stewart's, etc), I prefer the "by the tip" method also.
