The guinea feathers that Skues mentions are very straight and stiff and glossy. I would say the best substitute would be rooster spade hackles that are gray. Bill

They have very stiff neck feathers? Maybe I'm thinking of a different feather or a completely different patterns than you guys have in mind.

Near the head of a guinea fowl is a collar of unspeckled feathers that are stiffer than the others http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&hl=en ... =52&ty=114 Bill

Lance, (gingerdun) posted a photo of these feathers on 06 Dec 2012 along with a photo of Tups wool as provided by Skues to JL. This is the correct feather. They are easy to find on a Guinea skin; they are the un-barred neck feathers.

Here are three photos I took using my Guinea fowl skin. I have not been able to figure out how to arrange them in the proper order, but they include the whole skin, the neck ruff area, and an individual feather from the ruff.

For anyone interested that single Guinea feather photo looks to me (in my humble opinion) to be a fair sustitute for Pukeko and would also sub Heron for a Spey feather. :D
