Madison River Hatches - Mid to Late June

Post by William Anderson » Wed Aug 14, 2013 12:42 pm

As Karsten suggested, an ongoing thread of hatch comments, flies posted with dressings, preferences and opinions would be interesting to maintain as we plan and tie and dream. I'll come back to update this initial post with an offering of my own, but I'd love to get this started and see where it leads.

Eric Peper suggested this in another thread:

Caddis: CDC & Elk in size 16 with green, gray or brown CDC bodies. I like a "medium" shade of deerhair for the wing. This is my "fall back" fly for June and early July. I'll go through 2-3 dozen in that timeframe.
Green Drake: is Drunella grandis, size 10, suggest emergers and dun imitations, BWO body color. Midday hatch. I like a flymph pattern for this one.
Western March Brown: is Rithrogena, size 14, dark brown body in whatever dun design you like. In a pinch, a Dark Hendrickson would do the deed. In a warm year, these will be pretty well hatched out by mid-June. Midday hatch
Baetis: Size 20 BWO, midday hatch
PMDs are possible, and these will be a size 16, any sulphur pattern you like will do just fine. The subspecies in the west has just a tad more olive color in the body. Midday hatch. Here are a couple of flymphs I like for this hatch and a dun.
Brown Drake: Ephemera simulans. Same as the eastern and midwestern variety. Size 10. Evening to night hatch and spinner fall. Slow water sections. Brings out the really big fish.

Eric

I realize I'll have to edit this initial post, maybe from a different machine. Just trying to get the thing moving forward. Thanks for any contribution.

Thanks Will, for making this a separate thread, makes it simple to find. And thanks Eric for the suggestions, tips and photos of the patterns you like.

This should be great to keep track of.

Thanks.

Whoa, that’s some list you got going there Jim. :D
I recognize most of the flies listed and thought I’d post some resources for everyone. Here’s a list of some of the flies I thought people might not know about or be interested in. If there’s any I missed let me know?
Enjoy

fly_fischa & WiFlyfisher, Howdy;

Thanks for the visual aids!!!
When I first saw the list last night I started to track some of them down.
Not such an easy task for me, but then ya'll have been doin' this longer than I have  .
I found the Flex Girdle Bug aka "The Pickle"

then it was time for Rascal's 'Last out for the night'...

The Purple Explosion we had in the shop was very, very purple, as was the Purple Batman. There is a new Wilted Spinach variation that has been working well. Same bubbles at the tail, same black hen hackle, substitute UV Purple Ice Dub for the body. I can't tie them fast enough to meet the demand. The Psycho Prince Nymphs are very bright green, at least the ones that work are.

Confession.
When I was on the Madison last month, I was relieved to see certain reputable flymph anglers using flies that weren't strictly "flies," and while they were wingless, and wet, were definitely not flymphs.
These feathery lures have the initials W.B. and are known to be especially effective with the larger fish.
Of course I would never dream of using a W.B. (unless nobody is looking). :D
