Hi All;

What's your favorite hook for tying flymphs and do you use different hooks depending on the pattern or size?

Thanks in advance;

I use a variety of hooks. For flymphs, the vast majority of my tying for my boxes are on Mustad R50 and Mustad R70 series both standard or 2x long. For me, I don't think I can beat the quality or availability for the price. The R50 series for for imitations I want closer to the surface and the R70 series for a little deeper patterns. The R50's are standard and I use both up and down eye. The R72's are the 2x long nymph hooks. I use these mostly for flies that are imitating stoneflies or attractors.

I have four that I like. Old Mustad 3906 and 3906B's. I also use Diichi 1550's and 1560's. There are a few more that I use but these are the main ones.

Thanks Kelly. Lots of good reading there. I like Mustad 3906B and 7957BX, I still like the heavy wet fly hook by J Stockard (I was tying some pt soft hackles on those today), and I use a lot of Dai-Riki 125 emerger hooks. For up eye, I like the Mustad 94842, which seems to have a longer shank than some hooks, and I picked up some vintage Mustad 3913B hooks (I think that's the number), which are short in the shank and have a nice, wide gape.

The 3906B is my favorite hook. It getting harder to find though. The R72 is the replacement I believe. But not the same. :cry:

I like the 3906B too, a lot. I didn't realize it wasn't the same as the newer R72, or whatever the new number is. Dang. What is the difference exactly? As far as the original question, I have so many different ones I use, it is pitiful. I don't have a favorite. It just depends on the fly.

Kelly as far as difference the R72 if I have this right the R designates a round bend the 7 refers to wire size which may be close to the 3906B. the 2 is I believe 2 extra long. I'm not sure just how the two hooks would compare in length but the bend would be different as I'm sure the 3906B has a different bend. Yep, it gets a bit confusing.

Regards, Jerry

I think you have it right Jerry. A little research and the 3906B equivalent is the S82. S for sproat. Haven't seen that one before. The R70 series is similar to the 7957 and 9671. Another good classic. The older hook series had a little more angle to the eye bend I think. But I'm going to need to see the S82 now.

My favorite hook is the 390 from Hayabusha: they have a straight eye and are a bit larger for the number: the 12 is as long as a 11.

Second best is the B175 from Kamasan. This hook has a down eye so most of the time I make the eye redhot and make the eye straight.

The last issue is that I don't want to pay more than 10 eurocent per hook or 10 euro for 100 hooks. :oops: :oops:
