I'm cutting all mine to length this year so my box looks neat and I can prove to myself the fish don't care. :D

Carl, snip away. I fished and did well with a caddis pattern tied with a grouse hackle that was oversized but cut to the length to the bend. I did again today with a woodcock pattern. Works great. Not something you want to give to a fellow fisherman on the stream unless they've seen you doing well with one. They look odd but work great.
