What does Natural Black/Bronze Hen refer to? Black I understand, Bronze less so. The combination really stumps me.Teach a old dog a new vocabulary.

Might be a black Sumatra chicken. The male is a very handsome bird.

Then again, a furnace hen might fit that description too.

The Feather Emporium has a ton of photos, showing possibilities.

I stumbled across something like what you are asking about ... maybe ...
I think Ray may be closer to it then I am, but, ... try looking through the
Brahma saddles offered by the same merchant.

Just my bestest guess.

Rex, I ordered a pile of very black and very iridescent chicken tail feathers that are very close to magpie tail fibers and webby. They were part of a big bundle intended for florists, but looks to me like a nice material for the Spring Black NCS pattern or Black Gnat pattern. Not that crow or magpie are tough to source but as we do, I found the opportunity to grab a cheap material in bulk irresistible.

I purchased a natural black versus a dyed black hen. I am still confused as to the term "black/bronze". It that a color or a combination of black with a bronze tip. UC Steve writes about using black/bronze on Swedish fly tied from a turkey feather tip. I couldn't see from the photo differences in coloration. If it is a different color tip, how is it different than a furnace?

Thanks to everyone for the input.

By the way. Just a personal experience to share. It is a bit embarrassing as I really do know better. I had a hip replaced 4 weeks ago. I have been chomping at the bit to hang out at the stream side and enjoy watching the fish. On my 67th birthday this passed week I drove by myself to the river just before dark to experience the caddis hatch I expected. Sure enough, there were caddis everywhere and they were dropping eggs at the surface. Not much was happening with rising fish. So to get a better look I walked down an easy slope to the water's edge with my wading staff. As I positioned myself for a good view I slipped on the gravel and fell. Now that wasn't too big of deal. I fall all the time fishing. But landing on the operated hip was a little jarring. The problem was I was weak in the lower extremities making standing a real challenge and the gravel bank was unforgiving. It was getting dark and I was off of the beaten path. I did get up after a bit of work and hobbled back to the truck but it took far too much time and energy. I had also left my phone in the truck. Morale: Don't be stupid, there is always tomorrow.

This is why Im interested in tying more right now than fishing.

If we could see the post your are inquiring about then we could understand better
with the context of the conversation ...

Hank, the second one. Also an article in Fly Fishing Northwest. The article called for black/bronze hen for hackle. The other posts just indicate black hen. I was wondering about the difference, if any.

I arrived home after my slip and fall with scabbed and bruised knees, hip and ego. The hardest part was hearing from my wife, "You said you wouldn't go near the water!" Everything has healed but the ego.i really wanted to throw this turkey tail fly!
