Anyone have Plover or Snipe they want sell?
Does anyone have a Golden Plover or Snipe they would be willing to sell? I would prefer full skins, but a wing or two would suffice?
Please PM me if you have any.
Thanks
Barry

Blue Ribbon Flies uses dyed sharptail grouse as a golden plover substitute. You could consider that as a stop-gap. The feathers are on the larger size.

Thanks, I have substitutes, but I want to be as authentic as possible with the classic patternszen leecher wrote:Blue Ribbon Flies uses dyed sharptail grouse as a golden plover substitute. You could consider that as a stop-gap. The feathers are on the larger size.

Barry, I'm glad you were able to connect with some original materials. It's a real shame that these are tough to come by, it's very hard to imagine a more attractive hackle than a golden plover. I guess I'm just hoping at some point they become available. I haven't sought them out recently due to the cost, but if I ever do find a source, it will be a very worthy investment.

William, I've bee "all around the houses" just trying to find a few! Hopefully I'll have enough for a few flies at least. Plover is common in Hawaii but it's no longer legal there. Apparently the Japanese like to eat it along with whale meat. Beats me how they like to visit Pearl Harbour, to gloat I imagine.William Anderson wrote:Barry, I'm glad you were able to connect with some original materials. There was a pair of Plover wings for sale on eBay last week, they went for a fancy price. Plover eat a lot of ground insects which along with bees are being pushed to extinction from the use of pesticides, same thing for bats and Blackbirds.
Now there are not enough bees left in the entire USA to pollinate all the almond trees in California

Bob, yes I have been using the feathers you sent me. I have since ordered some complete wings and Snipe rump from the U.K. I am on the waiting list for Plover! I am using old Partridge Hardy hooks, mostly eyed, but I am tying some to gut just for a laugh! I'm not totally sure how to attach the gut to a leader so I am putting a Perfection loop in the gut. Most of the places I fish are single hook only so another loop in the end of my tippet seems the way to go. I use braided leaders which I make, but I need to add a few feet of tippet. I'm going to use Rio Flouroflex I think to get a good turnover. I'm tying flies out of Brook and River Trouting as well as some other classic patterns. I'm going to keep going until my fly boxes are full!!!
Tying is a good hobby in California right now with all the rain.
I Steelhead fish a lot as well, I'm going to try to upgrade some of the classic patterns to size 6 and 4 hooks to see what happens when I swing them. Getting a giant Snipe might be a problem. I do tie Spey flys with heron and Blue Eared Pheasant, but I think soft hackles might well work as well. Any suggestions on feathers?

Bazzer, for steelhead softies I like natural & dyed guinea hen, waterfowl flank, golden plover, ringnecked pheasant, golden pheasant, domestic hen, & of course the heron & blue eared pheasant. Usually more than one, & up to three in conjunction. Good in clear water.
Re: Anyone have Plover or Snipe they want sell?
Steve, thanks for the tips. I have most of the materials need except for bigger body feathers. I'm going to just upsize a few classic patterns. Just for a bit of fun, who knows maybe the steelies will love them. A lot of the older steelhead fly patterns were pretty drap, not using the gaudy colors that we see today and they worked just fine
