PP&J's (Partridge-Peacock and Jamieson's)

Post by letumgo » Sun Feb 06, 2022 10:09 am

I recently ordered multiple colors of Jamieson Spindrift wool yarn and some new hooks and had to give them a try.

I am loving how easy this yarn is to work with, and how nice the fuzzy body looks. These are all simple variations on the theme, using wool yarn instead of silk floss. Wool yarn makes a nice durable fishing fly, but may lack the translucency of silk. Not sure yet, how the wool will impact fish appeal.

Black and White Variation (teal hackle & black ostrich herl) - This is intended to be a "high vis" pattern, for use when water clarity is low (turbid). I like to fish black & white patterns in these conditions to increase odds that fish can see the pattern. I also carry all black and all white patterns, for when fishing is difficult.

Basic Recipe: PP&J's (Partridge-Peacock and Jamieson's)
Hook / Thread / Wool Yarn / Peacock Herl / Partridge Hackle (very color/size/hackle to suit your fancy)

The flies above were all tyed on Patridge M2's in size 10 Heavy Single TUE hooks. Gorgeous hooks. Beautiful curves and wickedly sharp. Unfortunately there are only ten hooks in a pack, making easy to burn thru them all in short order. Looks like I need to order more hooks already....

Gorgeous as usual. It reminds of the P.O.P. series.

I was sad there was no Whiskey, but then realized Jameson is spelled different.

I was going to post my M&MM pattern. Muskrat and Makers Mark.

Yup. Basically a variation on the POP series, just simplified to the basics (no flash underbody, no silk and no tinsel wing bling). Meat and potatoes, kinda thing. A jigger of Jameson's would have been nice in my morning coffee.

Muskrat and Maker's Mark. Now THAT's a great combination! Mmm... :D

Very nice, thanks for posting Ray! Did you use just 1 strand? I just ordered some more yarn. It just NEVER ends...

OK, I'm gonna bite. I'm fairly new here, what is the POP series?

Greg - These we’re tyed with an unsplit strand of yarn. I tye it in all the way to the barb of the hook, then wind it forward in one layer. For a size 10 hook (or larger), there is no need to split the strands of yarn.

I think the POP series is in the tutorial section.

Ray,
Another set of great "creations" in the PP&J series! They are similar to your POP series!
Doug
Fish when you can, not when you should! Anything short of this is just a disaster.

John - See what happens when she leaves me home unsupervised. Fortunately, I'm saving money every time, by tying my own flies...

Thanks Greg. They fish well too. I've caught a range of very nice fish on the POP series, in a variety of hook sizes.
