Bob,
My first reaction to the idea of protecting materials would be to tie on a longer shanked hook, but keep the body short.
That is a good option. I meant to say that short shank=short paraloop (on this fly). Short/compact paraloop=less chance for trout to bite into it. Hope this makes sense. You could tie it on the longer hook, wrap lower half shank with thread, make the paraloop hump in the thorax area and finish the hackle.
