Can't sleep

Post by fishhead » Sat Feb 13, 2016 6:22 am

I think it looks like can't sleep

Hook mustad size 16 R73-9671 2XH/3XL
Thread UNI Fire orange 8/0
Body mottled marabou with 6/0 orange thread rib, but you could go without it or just a ball of dubbing in any color
Hackle brown hen
Bead cyclops black nickel 7/64"
Glass bead killer orange size? ( smaller then the other one).
Heavy on the Hard head cement and will put one more coat on whenever I wake up to get a nice smooth finish on the head

I think there is a streamer that looks like this just bigger but I can't think of the name right now, but I thought this came out kinda cool. I think I'll tye a few more with different color glass bead and body attractor colors like pink orange and chartreuse I think fit this fly

I am reminded of Keith Fulsher's Thunder Creek flies, but in a soft hackle form. A design worth exploring, for sure.

I'm a big fan of these flies and carry a whole range of them in my bucktail box. They are "fussy" patterns to tie (many steps), but they fish very well and are very effective.

I encourage you to keep playing with your design. I like the idea. ;)

Yes the thunder creek fly is what I was thinking of thanks for reminding me of the name. I really feel like this could be a good pattern I can't wait to try it out. I think this can be fished a bunch of different ways too. Here is the next one drying in the vise. I just dubbed the body a bright pink with no rib and used a hot pink glass bead in front of the black nickel bead. All the rest is the same. It's such a simple tye.

Whoa! That is great!

Is there any way I could get you to send me two or three of these? I'd love to test these on Lake Erie steelhead.

These are a great looking variation on the Thunder Creek theme, I bet they would fish well early season here or in Tasmania when the Brown Trout are chasing small bait fish.

Now you're getting creative. Sleeplessness can do that. :D I can't think of any reason this wouldn't be a great pattern in a lot of conditions.

Dan (fishhead)

When I came home there was a package waiting for me with a set of your "Can't Sleep" flies. Thank you very much for the flies, and for including multiple colors to test out. They are all terrific looking flies.

These are going straight into my fly box. I am headed out, first thing in the morning, to do some serious fishing this weekend and next week. I will let you know how the field trials go.

Thank you! ;)

Ray, Howdy;

See how it does with the small mouths too ... I don't think that's just a one fish fly.
