Muskrat & Quail

[tie2fish]

This fly was inspired by Dougsden's excellent "Muskrat & Moorhen" posting from a few days ago, substituting a couple of materials and incorporating a dubbing technique suggested in another member's comment.

Hook: Mustad 94833, Size #14 (as sub for fine wire, large gape 102y)
Thread: Anonymous fluorescent green synthetic, well waxed
Hackle: Neck feather from Gamble's quail (as sub for hard-to-get moorhen)
Tag: Tying thread
Body: Tying thread touch dubbed with muskrat underfur

Outstanding! Beautiful fly Bill. The Gabrel's Quail is a great sub for moorhen. Thank you for showing us other choices on hackle and touch dubbed body.

Yet another example of your impecable tying! I am just flabbergasted with the looks of the Gambles Quail hackle (I think it looks better than the Moorhen) and the touch dubbed body. You make it look so good! A Gambles skin is one I don't have in reserve. I think I will have to invest soon!

I've used both, and month later I can't tell which flies were tied with which.

Probably should have mentioned that I came by these hooks in a swap with zen leecher (Bill Warner). He can't use them where he lives because the fish are too big there ; I have no such problem on most of the water I fish.

Those hooks came from EF Hille's back when Hille's was a big name in fly shops. I traded Bill some old hooks for a set of his display quality flies.

Bill, how is it that such a simple spider still has the power to excite the senses after all these years. This looks like a superb little creature and the sparse body and spring loaded hackle look like it will dance. Beautiful tie.
