Debating with myself as to posting my original reply I finally I realized there may be some good in the post as those new to tying may not even realize the odd numbers are also used in hooks. That said you are also correct in that the various company's may very well have their own standards as to length along with about anything else involved in the design of hooks having their name. With that ones #14 could easily be another's #15 or #13. Who knows perhaps even more dramatic a difference than that.

Jerry,

Your post was no doubt relevant. I had not thought about that aspect.

Comparing hooks of the "same" sizes from different hook-manufacturers can make you wonder. I am tying "Black Magic" for the moment (the grayling pattern Bob Smith mentions in the topic "Hook finish". Found a picture on Philip Bailey's site. Tied an orange Pearsall's head on a few of them. Nice). The hook I am tying it on is Maruto D04, which seems to be identical to Tiemco 103BL but a lot cheaper. I don't believe we have so very many hook-manufacturers as it can seem. It is probably the same picture as with fly lines.

Bob - I have been using Kamasan B525 for a few years and like it very much. Just wanted to try Maruto.

Don't know what I wanted to say, do I?

Mark;

Calm down ("MY GOD< Hank, you've gone and done it, now"),..... just asked a question to see which hooks everyone is the most fond of.
Quietly taking notes to see what's what. So far just about everyone has a different hook that they favo(u)r. Only the Mustad 3906b and a Daiichi 1550 have 2 hits each. Haven't gone an ordered up a truck load of anything ...yet ;)
hank

Everyone Else, PLEASE keep on answering my basic question What hook do you use MOST of the time when tying Flymphs?
Thanks ALL,
hank

I have been trolling through my collection of Fly tying records
(CDs) and when i read this string of posts, I remembered some
hook info I had noticed. I have added it to the Hook section
(last page) on my site. I hope it is usefull.

For my spiders I use the Daichi 1640 or if I want a much heavier I choose the Drennan Super Specialist mostly a # 12.

For flymphs my standard hook is the Hayabusha 390 # 12 or # 14.
