That's always promising. Bill, Thanks for sharing your research. I've had the same question about having to alter a piece of pale yellow silk to get it to an olive tone, when a number of olive, tan and grayish silks are available. I'll admit, the resulting tone from using cobblers wax over #3 is unique and when wet the light olive or ash silks are a different shade from the waxed #3, but I've wondered where this came from. Was it initially done by necessary without documentation/literature and subsequent lit follows the precedent? dunno.

I just ordered the book Anglers book of the Clyde by James Milne. I already have the book of Reid about the Clyde so I am thinking of tying the Blue Dun in Clyde style.

Nice fly end Ty !! Here is some further information about this fly:

One fly, however, grabbed my attention – the legendary but reclusive Usk Naylor. This pattern has been misnamed and misdressed for so long that to see the real fly was a revelation. It was invented by a Mr P. Naylor of Worcester Cottage, Llangynidr. Worcester Cottage was the old Duke of Beaufort’s fishing lodge on the Usk, and the fly was first tied in the 1950s by Gordon Price, then gillie on the beat. It has a great reputation as an early-season fly.
