First row, from bottom up: 1. White, 2. Straw, 3. Primrose, 4 Light yellow
Second row 5. Yellow, 6. Amber 6A. Light Orange, 6B. Sherry Spinner
Third 7. Blue, 8. Purple, 9. Black, 9A. Grey
Fourth 10. Ash, 11. Golden Olive, 11A. Scarlet, 12. Cardinal
Fifth 13. Crimson, 14. Claret, 15. Maroon, 16. Olive
Sixth 17. Brown, 18. Green, 19. Hot Orange, 20. Light Olive
These are some of the results from my friend's photosessions. The first three is the same picture (lighter and darker). A flash called a "bouncer" was used. The fourth is taken in a primitive "light-box" in natural daylight from a window. If the result should be more true, every colour should have been photographed separately.
As can be seen, I was fortunate to eventually get the primrose on wooden spool (from the same source). If anyone is tempted, I think it's still possible to buy a complete set (from the seventees).
When these pictures had been taken, my friend had become hungry (to him it means death is just one step ahead) and the battery in his camera died. So - this is it...

Outstanding!!! This is extremely helpful. Can I have permission to use the photo to create a color reference chart? I'd like to combine the photo and text into a PowerPoint slide which could be printed to PDF. It would make a great reference card.

This really is helpful. Can I have a copy of your PDF, Ray? It would make a great little 4-6 reference card to have on hand. These are great pics.

Feel free, Ray. I have asked for permission. Please show us the result.

DD - Thank you for granting permission. Could you shoot me an PM with your full name and the name of the photographer. I will make sure you guys are called out as the creators of the content. Once I get the reference pulled together, I will request Mark (Soft hackle) or Ron (REE) to post a copy of the PDF to the reference section. Give me a little time to pull it together. Hopefully by Wednesday.

Stefan (DD) - I sent you an E-mail with the draft copy of the Pearsall's colour reference chart. Once you have had a chance to review the draft, we can publish it here. Can you confirm the number for Claret. I have another reference that listed it as number 191. I assume your number (14) is correct, but just want to be positive. I listed alternate names in parentheses for some of the colours.
Additional colours missing from the chart are:
30 Java Brown
31 Antique Gold
32 Classic Chestnut
33 Jasper (Black & Orange)
35 Royal Hunt (Salmonberry)

Ray,
You are right - the Pearsall's chart has the # 14 for Claret Gossamer/Naples/Marabou. # 191 is Claret "Stout Floss".
As far as I know, your additional colours are regarded as "american". My guess is that they were produced for rod winding purposes (that would probably exclude # 35 Royal Hunt).

Here is a snapshot view of the color reference charts. The PDF version that Mark posted in the reference section is larger and of higher quality.
