Another example of "getting over it"...........this fly has multipul flaws including hackle that is way to short.........i got over it QUICK! Fish will LOVE it, if i do say so myself. and it was fun to tye.....

Btw, that's another of those English Grouse feather for the collar in the fly above there. And the ribbing is vynle somethin' or other. There's a fly commin' up, that has an abdomen made of that same material.
This fly has one flawe (amoung several others), that really sticks out, but that may not be that obvious to some..........can you guess what it is?????? ..............well, right as i was doin' one thing/whatever that was........ .........BOING!!!!!........the rib pops off.......... .......took me bout 5 minutes to "get over it"...... thass a long time........but i did. And i really doubt it'd make much difference in the flies ability to fool a fish. still pisses me off though.....
another thing bout this fly.........the wing is a mangled MESS......but i aint worried bout it........actually i kinna like it. Looks like that mess i c on top my head every morning.

well..........at least that's the right attitude............ ..............but from what i've seen..........you'd have to go against your nature to come up with somethin' "dishoveled" (like that spellin'?)
Kars.....this is not really a fly tyin' thread per say.........i mean, there's a ton-0-crap to be learned (and i hope we can accomplish somma that), when it comes to that aspect............but the thread is really a philosophy thread...............about your outlook towards takin' things to seriously at times, and how you see the world in repationship to these things we hold so precious, and are involved with here..............
i swear you could teach a chimpanzie to tye a fly that would catch a fish.......yeah yeah, i know..... .......but what i'm after here is to expand our viewpoints.........by stretching the boundries of flymph tyin' and by applying it to alllll species of fish so as to use that example philisophically..........the thread could actually morf out to become Pike flymphs.......Bass flymphs........Bonefish flymphs........and still serve the over-all purpose of teaching philosophy by way of fly tying. THAT'S a creative approach to learning.........and of course the best thing about it would be to see everyone commin' up with "original" designs and not just repeating the same old stuff as a flymph.........thass to easy. But i guess we'll see where it goes.......it was just an idea for stretchin' out. Think of it as a Sat. afternoon Jam Session........with 25 solos per tune......... i use to work those things, doin' sound/bartending/and playin a few tunes (guitar), all at the same time in the 70's...........man, it was a GAS! Then after a dinner break.....i'd get to work 3 or 4 sets that night. DAMN i miss that ****.....

Mark ~ Without resorting to a slew of superlatives, all I'm going to say is that every one of the flies you've posted here (and elsewhere, for that matter) is a living testament to your creativity and substantial tying skills. Attempting to analyze each one leaves me a bit overwhelmed -- as though I was just on a whirlwind tour of an art museum. You do good stuff, bro'.

I think you might enjoy some of my series of steelhead flymphs I created for the Albany Expo in 2010. I was tying typical soft hackles and flymphs for the show but I wanted to show that soft hackles were not just little flies for trout. I later created 8 diffent color variations and here are a few.

Here is one of mine that was inspired by the flymph flies. This is a simple wingless soft hackle intended for steelhead fishing.

Roadkill.....Birth of the Cool was a LANDMARK date.........and your two toned bodies are definately "Cool".....as is the way you've used KF in the wings/collars............WAY Cool.
Ray that body is immaculate. It's amazing how once a cat has developed to a certain level.........it's VERY hard to ever go back, if you know what i mean. Once your work reaches some degree of excellence.....you simply MUST do everything you can to maintain that degree with each & every fly. That's what i see in your work Ray.....consistant attention to detail, and effort in the execution. We all owe you a debt of gratitude for setting such a high standard for us. That's the least we can do for eachother. i hope you get a chance to meet and talk with John Shewey some time..........he's amazing to get to listen to. The cat is so involved.........and his vast store of knowledge is STUPID........you don't even wanna say anything for the sake of loosing anytime at all to listen. i could listen to him for hours on end.........but have only had less than a dozen chances to listen for maybe up to a half hour at a pop. Anyway, make the effort to do that when the opprotunity arises. p.s. you'll soon be two flies behind at the JazzFlies thread......
