Ed Engle from Colorado has a video on tying this fly. He uses wire for the body. He winds the wire on the hook in a very unique way that reduces bulk. Is that where he doesn't tie it in, but winds the wire body and crimps the wire close to the hook as he described in his 2004 book Tying Small Flies.
