Darin,
It is heavier than Gossamer. They did have a thread that was very close to gossamer in heaviness, but I don't recall which one it was.

The 722 embroidery thread works, even though it's cotton, not silk. I used it for many years till I discovered sources for silk in the proper color. :D

To add to the discussion-- I do not use beads on soft-hackles or flymphs, nor do I add weight to the leader. To me, this restricts the natural movement of the fly.
