John, i use them as an attractor in a three nymph set up.

I too use weights on the leader to get the rig down. That being said, i do add lead wire to some of the patterns.

Black thread is used for the weighted nymphs, Brown for the unweighted Stones.

For me, it has been a phenomenal Fall fishing season. Most of the bugs of late Summer, early Autumn have gone. Even the October Caddis, whose appearance was brief has disappeared. I mix rabbit or Hare with Squirrel for my Hare and Copper patterns. It brushes out as spikey as I want it , yet stays fairly soft in the middle. I do not really care if it is soft in the middle or not.
