Re: Where have all the Soft Hackle Tiers gone?
This is a very interesting post and I use to post on this forum regularly but life threw me a curve ball and I had to deal with that for a while. During that time, I have continued to fish and have always swung soft hackle/hackled flies and flymphs for trout and smallmouth bass. I started with a 10’...

Re: Your Most Productive flies in 2015
I almost could not sleep last night. I would be remiss if I did post a very close second place fly. Same pattern as size as above but I use Yellow Veevus thread that is well waxed.

Re: Your Most Productive flies in 2015
This was a hard decision but my best fly last year was a #20 Purple and Partridge with a small amount of mole dubbing for the thorax. I mainly fished a tailwater river this year and this proved to be highly affective, especially fishing it in an upstream fashion.

Questionable Fly
Prior to all the snow coming our way, I decided to get a day of fishing in. I tied the usual lot of flies for where I fish: midges, bwo's, and pheasant tails and right before I finished I experimented by using a partridge feather on a bead head pheasant tail. I have to admit that I looked at the fly...

beaten up flies......
Just an observation that I noticed last week after unpacking from a trip and seeing what flies I needed to tie but it seemed that the flies that were chewed up and beaten up after catching a few fish seemed to worked better than a "fresh" new fly. Perhaps I over dressed the flies or it jus...

Re: Swinging soft hackles
The switch rod that I used was made by Darrel at Skagit Spey Custom Rods. It really is a great set up for swinging flies in tight areas. Here is a video of the same rod being used by Ed Ward. You may have to copy and paste the following link to see it : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tC_pzl_PKig Th...

Re: Swinging soft hackles
I did ok today. I was using a #24 purple and starling and a #20 purple and partridge as a trailing fly. The switch rod I am using is a 9' 4 wt with a 13 ft, 200 grain skagit line (OSP Commando head) and a 7 ft versi leader with a 6 ft leader of 6.5 X fluorocarbon. It is what Ed Ward calls a micro sp...
