Re: Black Magic North Country Spider (Robert Smith Video Tutorial)

I suspect the wire is there - whatever the colour - for weight alone. I cannot see any other reason for it. Not as if the colour shows through the herl when you look to how it’s wrapped. It says the fly was dated 1967 - not a lot of options back then; silver, gold, copper and coated ( red/wine) I’d ...

Some old thread I picked up....

Ok it’s not silk, but a form of cotton. I kinda like the look, colours and hues of these. Multi stranded so can make the thread quite fine. Pretty old, maybe 60 or 70 years, maybe older, I don’t know but I’m interested to see what they are going to be like for bodies and ribs...... perhaps in dubbin...

Re: What rod do you use?

I’ve got well over fifty fly rods, many being vintage glass I’ve collected over the years.. The only high end rods I’ll use are Winston. They just suit me. My regular 6 wgt is a B3X which I just love, along with a 5 wgt version as well. And a 4 wgt Passport which is a cool rod for wet fly fishing. D...

Re: New Millennium Black and Rubber

It’s basically a few fine rubber strands in a dubbing loop....
I have occasionally used them ( only when no one else can see me.. ) and caught a few...

C19

Named after these interesting times... Tied as a wee wet for fishing at this time of year in the local (although alas that’s not happening any time soon given the country lockdown...) and to imitate a small mayfly that comes off this time of year. Hook is 14 to 16, thread of olive, tail and hackle o...

Re: The Bou Body (a "softest" hackle fly)

I tie a nearly identical fly in olive with red thread for damselfly nymphs in Stillwater.... the difference being I use but one turn of ‘hackle’ at the front and rib the body with silver wire.

Mr Smith, greetings from the bottom of the world...

Just curious; have you discussed these errors with the author prior to posting your comments?

If so, I’d be interested to know what his response was..

Cheers!
