Re: Drought

Well. Freezing down here. heavy snow on the hills and heavy frosts on the flats. Just back from Australia and it was freezing there too..... Filthy head cold and though the rivers look good, the fish will be busy spawning in my neck o the woods so will leave them alone for another 4 - 6 weeks.....

Yeh not so bad thanks. Been an interesting few months....

Off to south Australia next week for a holiday. Camper vanning, in the middle of winter.... So that wil be fun! And there are fly shops I have cunningly planned to be on the route..... 8-)

Small caddis soft hackle

Just whipped it up today: No name but I kinda like it. Its mid winter and cold here. Shortest day almost upon us. This reminds me of warm summer evenings fishing into the setting sun with a glass rod and a team of small wets http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd68/matuku/WeeWet.jpg Hook: Of choice #...

Re: Does the head of a fly make a difference?

What is the purpose of the head (in the main) other than finish off the fly? May as well make it as small as possible. After all there is an eye to the hook in front of it...... Aesthetics only IMHO. If a fly looks better to the beholder with a biggGer or smaller head then they will use it. It's a c...

Re: Clockwise or Counter-clockwise?

Right handed and the business end of the vice is to my right when looking at it. I wind the thread towards me. So that's anti clockwise for me.... And so things like wire - or other things to be wound opposite to the thread direction would be clockwise If that answers your question lol

Re: question: Top 5 flies

Spur winged plover and mouse
Pukeko and red
Starling and herl
Neilson's caddis
Woodcock and hare

Those would be the ones I have the most confidence in..... Down here anyways.

Re: Head Cement ???

Mainly Veniard's celliare or what ever it's called. I have always liked it. That and Sally Hansen's as per above posts, now that I have found an NZ outlet for it.. To be honest it depends on the fly as to if I use cement or not for the head. Often I don't bother, just relying on my whip fish or a bi...

Re: Tenkara... is it a fad

I think I understand the question.... Is it a new impact for fly fishers much like double handed rods have made an impact... And east European nymphing techniques? Both old for some. But new and exciting for others. Same can be said for tenkara... Comes down to the way things are marketed and advert...
