Can some one direct me to a reference or just tell me, what size, shape.etc. of hooks were "f", "ff", "fff", and "fe"? Book published in 1843.

Do you consider changing the name of a fly if it has other components such as dubbing material, hackle material, shape of hook, etc., than the original? I guess variant covers it. A Stillwater fly fishing club I know about considers all curved hooks to be a waste of time and only tie on straight hoo...

I would think the birdnest imitates a caddis larvae, possibly a scud is small enough. I tie a hares ear without wing-case for small river caddis....size 20 in olive. I have tied and fished the "plain" birdnest for a caddis. In Stillwater that have few caddis it still works great....opportu...
