Re: Itch Scratcher Soft Hackles

The rams wool crossed my mind, but I didn't end up trying it. I've used it for making minnow patterns, and it works great. You just have to comb out the fibers before tying them in.

Angora Goat makes beautiful dubbing. Similar to seal dubbing, but not quite as translucent or with as much sparkle.

mkmury - First off, welcome to the site and questions are always welcome. Here is a link that goes into the details of the "Leisenring style" dubbing method.

Re: Itch Scratcher Soft Hackles

Mark - I bought skeins of wool from the local JoAnn Fabrics. Your absolutely right. Most of the yarns that are availible are blends of different fibers (natural and man-made). I had to be very careful to read the label, to make sure that the skeins were 100% wool. The packaging on the Fisherman's ya...

Re: Itch Scratcher Soft Hackles

Ron - No. I am not using the tag end to form the rib. I dub the silk at the front of the pattern, then wind it back to the bend of the hook. The trick is to only use enough dubbing to get to the bend of the hook. This is around 1.5 inches of dubbing for a size 12 hook. At this point, the silk should...

Re: Itch Scratcher Soft Hackles

I went a little crazy this afternoon and created a range of all natural wool dubbing blends. I chopped up different color wool yarn into a coffee grinder and blended the bits together. Then I had to try out the different mixes with different color tying silks. I'm really digging the course, yet very...

Re: Red Fox Squirrel Flymph

Mark, this is a marvelous flymph variation! I love the choice of orange thread for the abdomen. Reminds me of Fran Betters use of orange tying thread in his famous patterns. Gorgeous fly!

Re: Good Luck Chuck

This pattern translates extremely well to the smaller size. The TUE hook retains the character of the larger steelhead version.

Re: Beaded Soft Hackle Nymph (tup's inspired)

Enchanting little fly, Carl! I am especially impressed with the dubbed abdomen of the fly. I love how you can see the silk underbody though the mole dubbing. It's easy to over-do the dubbing on such a small fly. You make it look easy.

Re: Partridge & Tups (variations)

Mark - I know what you mean about the seal dubbing. I have made other "Tups" dubbing blends (with seal fur), but was never quite happy with the blend of colors. I just had difficulty getting the ratios right. Mr. Valla's tups blend appealed to me because of the repeatability, and the simpl...
