Re: March Brown design drafts
Here is one of the new batch, up close—all same materials. Sorry about it being flattened on my scanner. Pete Hidy tended to use the wider tinsels, so I'm doing the same. I presume he liked them for the increased reflectivity that enhanced the look of bubble mimicry. The downside is that it covers m...

Re: March Brown design drafts
Been a busy week, but I've been working on this. Here's the result—not very refined, but better than before perhaps. I opted for a two-tone body, like Tups. Suggestions welcomed, as always. Hook: Tiemco 5263, size 12, 2X heavy, 3X long Thread: Pearsall's gossamer Hot Orange, vintage on wooden spool,...

Pearsall's Hot Orange
The current color of Pearsall's Hot Orange, #19, is more yellow than the vintage silk. Anybody else noticed this? Disappointing. The three colors that Pete Hidy used the most were Primrose, Hot Orange, and Ash. Ash is no longer being made, and Hot Orange now appears to be a very different color. Gin...

Re: March Brown design drafts
Stefan, you get the prize for turning up great stashes of hooks, silk, etc. At some point I will do an inventory of the hooks here. A bewildering and intriguing assortment of vintage metal. Last night after tying three dubious March Brown variants, I spun a dozen bodies of a darkish brown blend of r...

Re: March Brown design drafts
Question for GingerDun - Have you been able to identify the hook that Pete used on the March Brown pattern photographed on page one? I thought he used Mustad model 94842 (new number R50U), but the shank looks way too long to be the same hook. I'd be very curious to know what hook was used... Willia...

Re: March Brown design drafts
Glad you liked the old man's MB. The examples that have been posted by several of you here, along with commentary and recipes, is more than I can take in right now, but I love it all. I went through Pete's feathers, and found some mottled ones that had a nice reddish brown color, just the right size...

Re: March Brown design drafts
Listening to you guys is like taking a college course. Can't tell you how helpful this is. Hearing how you think about the problem is priceless. I'll keep experimenting.
Some of your comments would take me in the direction of the March Brown that Pete Hidy tied.

Kelly,
These may interest you. The man seldom tied a fly the same twice, evidently. Anybody want a closer look, I can post any one individually. How about the little nymph at the end?

Re: Iron Blue Dun Nymph
GingerDun, Howdy; I have a question ... In the picture of the iron Blue, in front of the red head there appears to be something else wound on the hook. Is there some way you could tell us what it is ? Wax, some other thread, ????? Thanks for your time. hank Looks like a tarnished tinsel tag. Ginger
