Are you cutting the raffia into narrow strips with scissors (free-handed) or do you use some other method that results in a consistently wide strip?

The "classic" (black & silver) zebra midge. What other colors do you find successful?

I also purchased a copy based on the OP's writeup and follow-on comments. Found it on ebay for $26.95; said last copy available. It arrived today and can be a Christmas gift to myself. I was very, very good this year just ask my wife

I tied this version with Blue-eared pheasant herl as a substitute for Heron. Boy is it fragile. It's tied over Pearsall's Gossamer (Ash / #10). I like this fly lightly hackled, so I removed the fibers from 1 side of the feather.

Wow and again--Wow! I dream of finding a fly like this in my vise. The tag and the head don't even look like they are thread wraps. It's wonderful how the thread is visible through the dubbing (almost like a rib). Did you use a dubbing rope? And the "spread out" hackle just finishes the fl...
