Re: Partridge Hackle
Thanks CB & Jeff. This one is much better than the ones I tied last time before you all kindly advised me. The hackle barbs seem to be reasonably evenly distributed around the thorax. I was intending the thread to be a 'tag' and I thought lining it up with the barb was the right thing to do. I a...

Re: Partridge Hackle
Ok Jeff, here's last night's effort. I tied the hackle in using Lance's diagram as a guide. I found it much easier for a fly this size - #10. When I tied the samller feathers for smaller flies the feathers were breaking easily where the hackle pliers had hold of the feather tip so I found it easier ...

Re: Micro Tubing
Norm, I'm just wondering if the stone fly works well with fish? Please don't take offence as none is intended but although it's a very realistic fly, and I applaud your tying skill of which I have little, it seems to look a bit 'hard' or 'wooden' for want of a better word. I'm wondering if it lacks ...

Re: Partridge Hackle
Thanks Ruard, I'll check it out.
Jeff, I used feathers from a skin I have and although it's about 15 years old it's in very good condition as far as I can tell. I'll try out those instructions posted here and see how I go. I'll post a few photos later in the week.

Re: Partridge Hackle
Jerry, breakage was one issue but I also found the barbs when winding on the hackle tended to leave gaps. Not the evenly spaced ones expected with sparse hackles but ones that make you think there's a distribution problem as the feather is wound. I checked that there wasn't any missing barbs and all...

I thought 'tip tied' was a given, but I see from Lance's diagram it's personal preference or horses for courses.
I wouldn't know if brookies have a much of a reputation for being fly fussy.
Thanks again.

Re: Partridge Hackle
You may start a Flymph Forum war with that question. I prefer over the eye. Just an opinion. Don't want to step on any toes here! Thanks. I didn't realise there were entrenched camps on each position. Ok, so it's not super crittical, but is the effect the same? I tried to make some soft...

Partridge Hackle
What's the accepted way to tie the feather in - laying back over the shank, or forward over the eye?

Nice bee pattern with a red tag for attracting attention.
