Re: Variation on a Variation by Old Hat
Check your local JoAnn's fabric store (of course being up in east Texas that may be all the way to Shreveport or Dallas). The one here has a huge Sulky products display. Got some spools of the Sliver and what they call holoshimmer. The holoshimmer appears to be the same stuff but with a holographic ...

Variation on a Variation by Old Hat
Was so impressed with Old Hat's Copper King Variation that I had to run out and get a couple spools of the Sulky Sliver. Here is what I came up with Grouse and Old Gold Hook: Daiichi 1480 sz. 12 Thread: Wine 14/0 Hackle: Grouse wing coverlet Thorax: Peacock herl Body: Tying thread overwrapped with S...

Re: Copper King V.
Great looking fly! How is that sulky thread to work with? Appears to lay flat pretty well. Is what appears to be ribbing just the slight gaps between wraps of the sulky?

Re: Lil' Dorothy Swap
Just realized how crappy that last post sounded. Was trying to indicate that perhaps the fly to be tied may end up being called the Mark L. if it incorporates things found in the flies he has presented here over the years. Was not meaning to sound Schnarky or anything.

Re: Married wing wet - Brookie Fin
The original recipe for these flies was apparently a #6. From what I read this was the size of choice in the old gut leader era. I've tried the married wings on #12's thru #4 and found #8's and #6's easier to tie than on the smaller hooks. ... Good luck with your efforts. I've considered the metal ...

Re: Married wing wet - Brookie Fin
I wouldn't say even that the beard is too long. A couple of thing that might help with the head: This might seem counter-intuitive, but build it up from the front to back. When you chop off the butt sections of the wings, there's a tendency to want to smash those butts down with a lot of thread. Yo...

Married wing wet - Brookie Fin
Here is my first ever married wing fly. I just started trying traditional winged wets a few weeks ago and am still struggling with getting the wings to crush down properly at tie in (as seen here). Even so, I am impatient so I had to try a married wing. Critique of this from my perspective: Wing way...

Re: Old is new to me
Thanks guys for the input.
While this is my first up wing fly, this isnt the first set of wings I tried on this fly. I must have tied on/destroyed 7 or 8 pairs of slips before I got one that seemed to compress down properly (or at least the way the videos on youtube show it happening).

Old is new to me
Well, I had a bit of free time this afternoon to try something new. In my middle earth goddie bag, Ray included some mallard primaries. I've never done a classic winged wet (dont have the skills for such things yet) so what they heck. Why not try it? Here it is, My first traditional winged wet. Long...
