A good rule of thumb is to make them the size of the total hook length. From the front of the eye to the back of the curve, A sixteenth of a inch either way is close enough though with smaller flies you might want to get within a thirty second.

Dave tied it in in a way that he should have wrapped it counter clockwise. Then it wouldn't have "twisted". Certainly not the way most would have tied it and probably not the way he usually ties it in. He's a good guy and has done a lot for the sport. Probably thought he had a twisted hack...
