Re: In a straight line

My experiences with the "in a straight line" (IASL)set-up are fairly limited, but I've observed the following: 1. When sight fishing the take on any fly below the top dropper is quite easy to detect--i.e. there is no lag between the take and the movement of the top fly in the cast. 2. When...

Re: What rod do you use?

Wow. Lots to read and catch up on. Thanks again, Mike. The current rods I use for most of my wet fly fishing (in addition to my Tenkara) are the Greys Streamflex 3wt 10' and a wispy little Scott G-Series 1wt 8'. The Greys is technically a Euro-nymphing rod, but it's soft tip and relatively moderate ...

Re: Fluorescent or Non-fluorescent

In stained water there is no fluorescence, because the stain filters the ultra violet light. See this link I posted which explains and demonstrates this; http://www.skiptonflytyers.co.uk/snippets.htm Scroll down to "What use are fluorescent materials in water? " TL MC Mike, While I respec...

Re: Fluorescent or Non-fluorescent

Fluorescent material in flies is a subject near and dear to my heart. On the competitive circuit any possible advantage needs to be explored, and I've been pushing the limits with such materials. There's an excellent book on light as it pertains to fishing entitled [url=http://www.amazon.ca/What-Fis...

Re: Ruffed Grouse

I like grouse (in all it's many forms). I too have bags of feathers and "chunks" of pelts given to me by a few family members and friends that like to hunt upland game birds. I find they are softer than Hungarian partridge which is nice for slower water presentations. I also find they tend...

Re: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (warning: Heavy Synthetic Content)

Thanks everyone. Just something a little different. It's actually going to be used on Rainbow and Brookies in Quebec at the end of October. I'm also going to be testing at a lake in the interior of BC this weekend where the Rainbows go nuts for orange flies. Keep in mind competition fishing is rarel...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (warning: Heavy Synthetic Content)

I debated about putting this one up. First, it's not the best quality image and second, it's only vaguely "Soft Hackle" ...but in the interest of mixing it up a bit... Buffy the Vampire Slayer http://gallery.flybc.ca/albums/album607/Buffy_V3_a.jpg Hook: #10 Trout Legend TL400 Thread: UTC 7...

Re: THREADS ? ? ?

I'm a little late to the party on this one... Silk: I use Pearsall's gossamer for some of my tying, but normally just when I'm using thread bodies or when ribbing with silk. Benecchi 12/0: Best thread going IMHO. Has a good balance between strength and the ability to lay flat. Stronger than 8/0 uni....

Re: Partridge & Orange Medly

Very nice. Much sleeker. I like the vibrancy of silk floss, but it can be tricky to use and doesn't last as well as thread bodies. A coat of superglue does wonders for fly longevity, but it can alter the colour significantly. This can be mitigated somewhat by putting a layer of silver flashabou unde...
