Re: Availability of Spider Materials Today

I always presumed that those feathers were used precisely because they came for free with the dinner, or, were there for free after shooting the "vermin". And from that I assumed that I was free to use feathers from the birds I ate. >oh I don't believe it's considered a "new pattern&q...

Re: Stripping barbules from a partridge feather

Not a thing I suspected any one would have trouble with. All the flies I started with called for barbs for tails or wing or beards, all required pulling the barbs off and it was never a big deal, took a while before I discovered that the naked stems of small hackles make excellent tails for nymphs, ...

Re: Looking for...

I wonder how different the landrail is from our sora rail and Virginia rail? maybe a bird hunter could make a substitute.

Re: most productive soft hackle trout fly

All the above. Now I have a trouble working with starling and partridge/grouse, so heavy handed that it takes about six feathers to get one fly; but I can tie just about any wet I want with a grizzly hen. I like dun hen too. I reckon that if the fly can be suggestive of a food item and not an exact ...

Re: A wet fly bound to raise some hackles ;)

I like the look, but every time I tie one that looks like the first one, it wants to be a dry, even with hen.

Re: up eye wet fly hooks source

Well, that is the old number for a standard Dry fly hook (almost exactly the same as #94840, up instead of down) and not my most likely choice for a wet fly, but they are listed on ebay from Norway and the new number would be R50U-94842 which is "out of stock" at the usual places, but is t...

Re: Rio "Slinky Indicator"

Fly fishing, fly casting, fly rod fishing, fly line casting are all similar but different subjects I guess.
I fly rod fish, sometimes with flies.

Re: Rio "Slinky Indicator"

Barry, I've always thought it more about the way the fly was fished than about the material, color or exact mode of dress. There is however a definition that is quoted on more than one thread here that specifies silk and that the silk show through and blend with the dubbing. I suppose this rigid def...

Re: Rio "Slinky Indicator"

Missouri defines RoosterTails on spinning rigs as fly fishing on our "fly only" trout waters. Interestingly they do not allow foam bodies or rubber legs. I've always defined fly fishing the way it was in the state I learned in; done "with a fly rod and a single action reel"- no m...
