Re: re: tying Stewart's black spider

I tie them like Dave Hughes in his book "Wet Flies". Pretty simple. I think I am pretty heavy handed, but his method works well for me. I can only tie down to a #16 'cuz of my eyesight and big thumbs. :D

Re: Silica Gel for moisture control.....

Interesting thought. I'll follow this. My only experience with them is I keep 2 or 3 packs in my camera bag. Never tried them in my tying stuff, but never had any problems (except for the cat) either. Will keep an eye on this thread.

There is a dubbing available with Clear? Antron already mixed in called SLF Hare's Ear Plus. Most suppliers carry it.

I think the Partridge & Orange and Stewart's Black Spider, although I don't keep records of such things. Both are older patterns that work very well.

Re: Stripping barbules from a partridge feather

I probably do it like everyone else here. I hold the feather (with the curve down) in my right hand (I'm right-handed) between my thumb and forefinger, near the tip, and use my other thumb and forefinger to strip the feathers from the top of the feather, going right to left ,Toward the base of the f...

Re: Useing wool for dubbing

I normally just chop it up, then use a cheap coffee grinder to mix it. Blend in the coffee blender just like natural dubbing, and it can be used just as you would any other dubbing.

Re: re: William Anderson's website

Thanks, Ray, for the insight. A real loss, and a reminder of the kind of folks one finds lurking around many places these days. Wm's site held a lot of information for us all.
