Re: Kemp Bug

Great looking wet fly iteration of the original nymph shown here.
As a nymph it was an excellent producer in Yellowstone Park and the surrounding environs. I think it represented both a stonefly and the large gray drakes that are found in the Park's streams.

Re: Royal Coachman

So many Coachman variations. I am curious to know everyone's feelings about changing one bit of a fly pattern to create a new innovation. Does including the name Coachman suffice to honor the original and claim a new variant?

Re: Washing bird skins

Wash the bird the same way as preparing it for dying. Dawn will do the job. You will want to wash in lukewarm water and place between paper towels or newspaper to dry. Use your fingers to get at the tough spots.

Re: Winging with one side of feather

There is an easier method by simply folding the wing section cut from one side of the feather. I have been using the method for years on Muddlers, March Brown wets and many other flies tied with a feather wing. There are two key points with this method. 1. Cut a wing slip wide enough for the fold so...

Re: Pearsalls Color Chart

Here is a link to a photo from another site showing the different shades of Pearsall's #19 over the years. There is also a comment that it was virtually impossible for textile manufacturers to produce consistent colors in the past. This is the reason most textile products identified a batch number. ...

Re: Heritage series Mustad iron

Here is a link to a similar looking hook I use that costs a pittance of brand name hooks. I highly recommend it. https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/YbEAAOSwdzVXqEkX/s-l1600.jpg All I got was a picture. I saw no menu for prices. Trusting that this link will work. These are very good hooks. https://www.e...

Re: The Wood Duck Minnow (Greg DeYoung pattern)

An easy way to force feathers to lay back is to use a hair dryer with the hottest setting Just hold the nozzle of the air dryer close to the eye. It only takes a few seconds. Works perfectly for all variety of duck feathers along with wooly buggers and any palmered fly. It will easily sweep back gam...
