Last week, I happened by a certain fly shop; who's owner is a purveyor of historical fly fishing reels, bamboo rods, and ephemera. During the course of our conversation, he mentioned some feathers I "might" be interested in..........needless to say I was interested!!

The earliest diagram And text that I have found on this method of stripping quills is on pages 15 thru 18 in ROGER WOOLLEYS book Titled MODERN TROUT FLY DRESSING first published 1932. now that you mention it, I DO remember Ralph stripping duck quills in that manner - why I did NOT remember it before is beyond me.............

Nice fly John! Bearbutt's flies are indeed an inspiration. He could lead you down a slippery slope, however. True artists like him are hard to keep up with.
