Re: Keep on tying! (Greenwell's soft hackle)
Ray, I have to admit I seldom use soft hackles when guiding. It’s mostly chuck and duck with large indicators and nymphs. But in saying that I’ve done well on occasions with using soft hackles in place of nymphs. I generally stick to what I know works, it’s hard to experiment when a client is paying...

Keep on tying! (Greenwell's soft hackle)
I wasn’t sure where to put this, but I think the fishing cabin is as good place as any. I’m not a great tyer because of poor vision up close, but my flies are strongly tied to withstand the rigors of casting and fishing. Here is a example of what I’m talking about.

Re: Bead Thoraxed Soft Hackled Nymphs
Copper wire or a little squished lead foil underneath the thorax is perfectly acceptable in my book. Certainly does not add “bling” unless your fishing for pike or bass.

Re: Bead Thoraxed Soft Hackled Nymphs
If you look at most brass beads they have a larger hole at one end than the other. The original use for this was to slide a bead onto your tippet when extra weight was required, the larger hole going over the knot and eye of the fly. Still a very useful way of turning any non beaded fly into a beade...

Re: seal's fur or kid mohair for dubbing
Earlier this year I purchased a very large bag of baby seals fur on eBay which cane from the U.K. it’s enough to fill a gallon ziplock bag with. I actually was given a similar sized bag of dogs fur which I got when in Petco from the dog groomer it was a yellow lab retriever. They simply gave it to m...

Re: Spun body nymph
I used to punt on the river Cam, which is in Cambridge, during my lunch breaks and weather permitting. There is a flock of swans there that know how to ring a small bell that is hanging over the river when they are hungry. Smoked salmon sandwiches and a bottle of bubbly. No trout there but plenty of...

Re: Spun body nymph
Polly R was a terrific fly tyer, I know his patterns best for his steelhead flies. His nymphs had a beautiful slim design to them, he certainly didn’t waste material. Looking at the pictures linked in this thread I feel it’s a great pity that the importance of conservation apparently wasn’t understo...
