Re: Gray Grizzly Flymph

Carl, You are channeling Pete Hidy in this, from stem to stern. The wraps of silk in the cone-shaped head look exactly like his signature style. I agree with Ray, it has that "If I could only use one fly, that would be the one!" look to it. The guard hairs seem to be something Pete was alw...

Re: Smaller flymphs

Oh, man, Dana, if only I could tie like that.
That second fly is starting to look a lot like an olive version of the black gnat patterns that my dad tied for droppers—but his were a little bigger, and didn't have tails.

Re: Stewart's Red Spider tied by Leisenring

Thanks, guys, for this string of really interesting and useful comments. I should go back and look at the original scan of the flies, and see if I inadvertently lightened the colors.

Re: Stewart's Red Spider tied by Leisenring

Well, I think we all have the same question. And did you ever see any blue in a blue dun feather, or in a bluetick hound? I'm guessing British farmer/fly-tiers had developed an alternative way of referring to color in their livestock, dogs, and poultry. Their unconventional color vocabulary lingers ...

Re: Jim Leisenring's Iron Blue Nymph, tied by him

Because of the Depression, Pete Hidy dropped out of Wittenberg College after his sophomore year. When the bank foreclosed on their houses in Springfield, Ohio, Pete, his grandparents, his mother and father, and two younger brothers, all moved to Doylestown, Pennsylvania. They found refuge in the lit...

Re: Jim Leisenring's Iron Blue Nymph, tied by him

Here's a quote from a letter that Jim wrote to Pete in November, 1940, while they were finishing up the book: Now when you go to Nolls to exchange the hooks get me two spools of Pearsalls fly tying silk (colour Claret or Maroon) no other now I dont mean red and send it up to me I dont have an inch o...

Stewart's Red Spider tied by Leisenring

This fly was mounted in the framed set of 22 favorite flies that Jim Leisenring gave to Charley Rethoret, the proprietor of Hotel Rapids in 1941. The set was in the collection of Bernie Pociask who kindly let me scan them.
