Re: Hackles .... say "When!"

Kirk said - "I still have feather left. I can get another turn out of it." That's the problem here; I'm THRIFTY (cheap). I feel like I paid for that feather, by golly, I'm gonna get the most out of it! I know, I know, the tying directions lots of times call for 1 1/2-2 turns. But that jus...

Gotta say I never understood the oft quoted 1 1/2 turns of hackle. On a sparse hackled pattern that spells off kilter barb distribution to me 8-) To me it also seems counter instinctive. To put 1/2 a turn on means I'd have to tie off in the opposite position -180* if you will - that one naturally w...

Re: Orange Fish Hawk variation

Nice fly Kelly. Just quick couple of questions if I may.

The silk body is Fish Hawk thread? Does it have a number? Also, assuming it is silk thread - it's sitting really flat and smooth - did you untwist it slightly so it beds down as single strands like floss? If not, how did you get it so smooth?

Re: Copper King V.

I've never heard of "sulky silver" before but the effect you've got in the abdomen of that gorgeous fly is very cool.

I don't know the original you mention but like the others said, it's a beautiful fly.

Re: Attempted Partridge & Orange

Thanks Ray. Form here they can only get better...

My first examples are not very "clean" and those recalcitrant partridge hackles take some practice.

Re: video - Partridge & Orange

Hans,

After trying to tie a couple of these I have a new respect for the example you've posted in the OP.

The video was very helpful, your ability to get the thread just right in quick time amazed me. But how did you get the body wraps so neat?!
