Re: seal's fur or kid mohair for dubbing

Earlier this year I purchased a very large bag of baby seals fur on eBay which cane from the U.K. it’s enough to fill a gallon ziplock bag with. I actually was given a similar sized bag of dogs fur which I got when in Petco from the dog groomer it was a yellow lab retriever. They simply gave it to m...

Re: Spun body nymph

I used to punt on the river Cam, which is in Cambridge, during my lunch breaks and weather permitting. There is a flock of swans there that know how to ring a small bell that is hanging over the river when they are hungry. Smoked salmon sandwiches and a bottle of bubbly. No trout there but plenty of...

Re: Spun body nymph

Polly R was a terrific fly tyer, I know his patterns best for his steelhead flies. His nymphs had a beautiful slim design to them, he certainly didn’t waste material. Looking at the pictures linked in this thread I feel it’s a great pity that the importance of conservation apparently wasn’t understo...

Re: Tups

Bazzer69, Howdy; Has anyone have any genuine Tups dubbing. By that I don’t mean recent blends but dubbing that’s been verified as being from the early 1900’s? I’m looking for the impossible? Certainly, but no harm in asking. I would like to borrow some and then return it. I would only need a tiny s...

Re: Tinsels and other Bling...

None of the flies shown by roadkill, I would consider as too much bling, well nearly, I personally don’t like to see soft hackles tied with beads. I do fish with beaded nymphs, but only really to increase a flies sink rate. But I can see the artistry in flies ties with bling even if the fish do not....

Re: dyed starling skins

I tie quite a few small flies with starling feathers. I can't find dyed skins locally. Anyone recommend a source and are the dyed skins really worth having for variety. Does the dying weaken the feathers? Below is where I have purcahsed a lot of high quality fly tying materials... https://competiti...

Re: Greenwells Glory

I have great success for a good few years with the down wing wet fly pattern when fished on lakes when the Lake Olive is hatching. I’ve also had good success on moving waters, but I’ve never tied it with the up -wing, time to correct that now I’ve got a nice cape for the hackle and plenty of starlin...

I like the use of the use of the tippet for the tail. Nice looking general purpose fly.

Re: Worth Reading

Yes. John Kreft’s blog is well worth reading. He is a mine of useful information on fishing the west. Polly Rosberg has some terrific patterns, love all of them particularly for steelhead. My boxes are now pretty full so it’s time to get some more. I think I need a large box for the boat. I fished t...
