Re: Winged wet fly spinners

For a traditional pattern, how about the Female Beaverkill wet? Using this fly for a starting point, I've tied "wet rusty spinners"/"soft hackle spinners" with an egg sack and soft hackle. I've had my best luck with them following a Hendrickson or March Brown spinner fall. Tie it...

Re: Atherton#4

Tom,

Your tying is impeccable!
John Atherton's book and his philosophy on tying is very interesting. The Fly and The Fish is a title that I refer to quite frequently. His dubbing blends, use of cree hackle, and tying style make for very effective flies.

Best,

Re: Doug Does Dubbing

Doug, You've done a great job processing the squirrels and turning them into most useful dubbing. I kill a few squirrels every year, I really enjoy hunting them, and especially eating them. They make a very nice pot pie, but that's another story... We don't have many fox squirrels here in western Ne...

Re: Santa was a fly fisherman

Hi Tom,

The old reel seat was a nice find, and well suited to the rod you built. As always, beautiful work, and inspirational!

Best,

Re: Harry Darbee Vise

Hi Tom, That's a good idea for a repair. The knurled and slotted pivot pins have held up well for me. The original rivets that were supplied seemed to suffer from metal fatigue, and still needed to be replaced if you were going to use a different jaw. The washers that were supplied didn't last long,...

Re: Harry Darbee Vise

Good morning, all. Thanks for the nice comments. Life gets so busy...most of us want or need nothing more than the time to do the things we want to do, right? John, thanks for your kind offer! The Thompson vise is in fine shape, and I don't need anything to keep it operational, but thank you. I squi...

Re: Harry Darbee Vise

Hi Ray, Thanks for posting the pics, great memories from a really nice event. I haven't been on the board in a while...a little deer hunting and a lot of work. I've had my Xuron vise for about 10 years. I purchased it from Capt. Larry Kennedy at The Bedford Sportsman in St. Simons Island, GA. A real...

Re: PT Barnum Nymph (Pheasant Tail Barnum Nymph)

Hi Ray, It looks like it came right out of the greatest show on earth!

Lots of potential to draw strikes in this high and cold water we are experiencing this spring.

Best,

Re: Gambels Quail

Hi John, Very nice flies, as always. I still have a couple of Gambel's quail skins from birds that I killed when I was stationed in Yuma, AZ. The farmers loved it when we killed a few, they would really tear up some newly sprouted crops. Very tough birds to hunt without a dog! The feathers have a ni...
