I favor primrose Pearsall's Gossamer. Sometimes I wax it with dark cobbler's wax, sometimes I don't. Effective fly either way. I usually tie it on a size 14 1XS hook like a Daiichi 1640.

Ron - Me too. :D ;) I found starling to be much more delicate than hen hackle. If I tried to muscle it around I would inadvertently break it off. Hen hackle is stronger, so it is a little more forgiving. Starling feathers have such delicate stems, they require a light touch. I had to switch to my l...

Really nice, Ray. So, if the wing lays flat it's a hen wing and if it's on edge it's Glanhros? Brilliant dressing. Peacock and starling are two favorite materials. Every time I see that vise, I smile.

I don't remember where I saw it (I'm old, gimme a break), but someone did a nice photo story of silk colors, both wet and dry, and waxed and not waxed. Wish I could remember where that was. Knowing the color shifts helps immensely.
